Insomnia (a curse or blessing)?

The economy of the modern era has changed the work schedule of most of the people. Due to the lockdown, now it has become necessary to do work from home and night duty. There is an increasing number of people who are not getting enough sleep and which is affecting their health.

A girl is sitting on the bad seems upset as she is unable to sleep

It is said that Kumbhakaran(Hindu Mythological charachter) used to sleep in deep sleep for 6 months in a year. If he were in today's age, he might not have even got the required 8 hours of sleep every day, he too would have longed for sleep stuck to electronic screens like us.

The economy of the modern era has changed the time table of most people's work. It has become almost necessary to do night duty and work from home. Obviously due to this the number of people who are not getting enough sleep is increasing continuously. According to a recent survey, almost one third of Indians are deprived of adequate sleep. But there is also another aspect of this that people who are involved in the business of solving sleep problems are getting rich.

Sleeplessness is nothing new. But in today's era, many worrying new elements have made it an epidemic that is affecting teenagers and youth as well as children. These factors range from too much stress to hypertechnology including an overactive mind.

In fact, it has become so necessary to generalize information about the health hazards arising from insufficient sleep that the World Association of Sleep Medicine had to celebrate World Sleep Day on 15 March.

As mentioned above, one third of working Indians are not getting enough sleep, leading to health issues, as well as spending a lot of money on sleep.

A few years ago this survey was done by Regus, while a report in Time magazine said that since 2008 there has been an increase of 8.8 percent in sleep related expenses every year.

In another survey, it was found that 93 percent of Indians get less than 8 hours of sleep a night, while 58 percent believe that their work is affected due to insufficient sleep and 38 percent say that they have seen my coworkers sleeping at work. This survey has been done by Nielsen Company for Philips Respironics, which is involved in the business of sleep aid and diagnostic devices.

Health related issues

There is no doubt that not getting enough sleep leads to many health problems. There are more than 80 types of sleep disorders. Also, due to this, problems like heart attack, depression, high blood pressure, memory loss etc. can also occur. Experts say that it took us 25 years to understand obesity as a disease, the same mistake should not be made in relation to sleep.

At the same time, the problem of insufficient sleep has opened up a tremendous market for getting sleep. Earlier the person who was able to sleep properly at night then tried to take energy drinks etc. to stay awake at workplace the next day, but now people troubled by sleeplessness are giving importance to medical intervention? This is the reason why there has been a flood of sleep clinics in the country.
A Sleep lab is present in Mumbai's Lilavati Hospital for the last several years. Earlier, there used to be hardly one or two patients a week in this lab, but now the number of such patients is increasing every day.

Benefits of insomnia

It is not that only people and companies associated with the medical profession are benefiting from the problem of sleeplessness. Some patients have even tried to convert their disease into profit. Take Dhruv Malhotra, for example. This 27 year old photographer doesn't sleep more than 3-4 hours a day. Many times it has happened that they did not sleep continuously for many days. But Malhotra took advantage of his illness to travel through the nights in Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Bangalore, Udupi and Jaipur and walk on footpaths, railway stations, taxis and started taking pictures of people sleeping under the flyovers, on the benches of the parks. Thus he got a new subject for his exhibition called 'Sleepers'.

In the same way, many patients are trying to convert their problems into benefits through the internet till late at night. These people do other work of blogging and writing through internet, do they benefit financially from this? Those who wake up at night have been there before and are still present today. History is full of such great personalities who could not sleep at night. Former US President Abraham Lincoln has been infamous for walking into the White House until late after midnight. Similarly, Napoleon Bonaparte, Marilyn Monroe, Shakespeare, Charles Dickins, etc. also used to do wonders. In today's era, film actors Amitabh Bachchan and Shahrukh Khan can hardly sleep at night. I will leave this to your judgement, whether it should be considered a curse or blessing.
